Is Your AI Jelly... or Sunbutter??? 🥜

The biggest mistake job seekers make with AI? Confusing jelly with sunbutter. 🥜

Stay with me... 😂

Because this one silly food comparison explains almost everything that's going wrong with AI in the job search right now. And it's the same thing I got to dig into with Logann Todd, Conquaya James and Melissa Venable on the National Career Development Association podcast.

Here's why it matters so much right now: hiring managers can tell. In a TopResume survey of 600 U.S. hiring managers, nearly 1 in 5 said they'd reject a resume or cover letter that looks fully AI-generated. But here's the twist - 52% said they're fine with AI for proofreading and drafting support, as long as the final product still sounds human.

So the question isn't whether to use AI. It's HOW. 👇

Econ 101: Complements vs. Substitutes

Back in Econ 101, we learn about two kinds of goods.

🍇 COMPLEMENTS: Peanut butter + jelly. They're better together! Each one makes the other more valuable.

🌻 SUBSTITUTES: Peanut butter + sunbutter. One replaces the other. Put them together and you don't get anything special.

Now swap in AI and YOU.

Use AI as a complement, and it adds something you couldn't do on your own - a superpower on top of your strengths. ⚡

Use AI as a substitute, and it just replaces the very thing that makes you YOU. That's a net loss. 📉

The Biggest AI Job Search Mistake: Hitting the EASY Button

When I got early access to ChatGPT back in 2022, my first thought was: WOW, this is going to be amazing for job seekers!

If you're an international student, if you're an introvert, this is going to help you tell your story SO well.

What I didn't see coming? Everyone rushing to turn it into the Staples EASY Button. 🔴

One click. Instant resume. Instant cover letter.

Which sounds great in theory...

Except the whole point of the job search is to stand out from everyone else. And now you sound exactly like everyone else! 🤦‍♂️

Think about it from the recruiter's side. They're drowning in a tsunami of applications. And the thousandth cover letter that opens with "I am writing to express my interest in..." doesn't just look generic. It looks lazy. (I broke down exactly what that looks like in Is Your Cover Letter Screaming LAZY AI???)

That's the substitute trap. And it's the difference between AI making you forgettable and AI making you UNFORGETTABLE. 💪

3 Ways to Use AI as a Complement in Your Job Search

So what does peanut butter + jelly actually look like? Here are the three moves I'd teach every job seeker (and every career coach) tomorrow morning.

1. Discover your hidden strengths

The ultimate shame of most job searches is that we rush. The search feels so painful that we skip the part where we figure out what we actually want - and then we pay a tax on everything that comes after. Resumes that don't match. Cover letters that don't land with the hiring manager. Jobs that don't make us happy once we have them.

The fix comes from a Japanese concept called ikigai: you don't need a 100-question career assessment, you just need to know who you are and what the world needs from you. And AI is shockingly good at reading between the lines here. Try:

What are my biggest strengths? What are my most burning passions?

Feed it real context first - projects you loved, feedback you've gotten, the stuff you lose track of time doing. Then let it reflect back what it sees.

2. Find unexpected roles

Once your strengths and passions are in focus, flip the question:

What are 10 specific job titles that match those skills and interests?

All of a sudden, you have a list of some of the best roles in the world - not for random people, but for YOU in particular. That's something we just couldn't do as easily before AI, and it's a WAY better use case than ghostwriting. 🔥

3. Uncover what makes your story land

Here's the crazy one: use AI for empathy. 😮

A job description looks so boring on the surface - all those HR-approved bullet points. But paste it into AI and ask:

What are the three burning pain points behind this hire?

Now you know what's really going on behind the scenes. So when you sit down to write, you're not writing into the void - you're writing to your future boss about the problems keeping them up at night, and the parts of YOUR story that solve them.

The Substitute Test: Is AI Erasing Your Voice?

Before you send anything, run one quick check. Did AI replace your thinking, or did it sharpen it?

The easiest way to keep AI on the complement side is to make it your editor, not your ghostwriter. Write your own draft first - your words, your stories, your lived experience. Then ask:

Tell me all the reasons this cover letter feels phony, that it's not connecting with what the boss needs, and that it's not personalized enough.

AI can be really tough on us. But we've got to ask it to be if we want those results! 🙌

A few more gut checks:

  • Could any other applicant have sent this exact sentence? If yes, rewrite it with a specific detail only you could include.

  • Would you be comfortable explaining every line out loud in an interview? If not, it's not really yours yet.

  • Did AI add a fact, number or claim? Ask it to show its work, and verify it before it ever hits a recruiter's screen.

The Bottom Line

AI isn't the problem. Using it as sunbutter is. 🌻

Use it to discover your hidden strengths. Find unexpected roles. Uncover what makes your story unique.

Just never use it to replace the very thing that makes you YOU.
