Referrals used to give you a 10X edge over the online application. 😮
Today? It's 20X. 🤯
WOW.
I shared why on The Data Career Podcast with Avery Smith this week - and the answer isn't that referrals got stronger.
It's that applications got weaker.
Because AI turned the job search into an arms race:
Job seekers use AI to apply to 500 jobs. ⚡
Recruiters use AI to screen 500 applications. ⚡
And both sides end up more miserable than before.
Here's the math nobody wants to hear:
If you're applying to random jobs in a completely mechanical way, your odds aren't 0.01%.
They're 0%. Period.
So what actually works in 2026?
1️⃣ Find the human on the inside. Anyone can refer anyone.
2️⃣ Ask for advice, not a referral. People say yes to mentorship 10X more than to favors.
3️⃣ Use AI to research the hiring manager's pain points - not to fake your experience.
Because the whole game now comes down to one thing:
Find this human in the universe, understand their needs, and connect with them in a deep and meaningful way. 🙌
